Can I Shower After Getting a Tattoo?
Share
This is one of the first questions people ask after leaving the studio — usually followed by, “I’ve already had one… is that bad?”
The short answer is yes, you can shower after getting a tattoo. You just need to do it properly.
Showering vs Soaking
Showering is fine. Soaking is not.
A quick shower helps keep the tattoo clean, but baths, hot tubs, swimming pools, and long soaks should be avoided while the tattoo is healing. Submerging a fresh tattoo softens healing skin and increases the risk of irritation or infection.
When Can I Shower?
Most people can shower within 24 hours of getting tattooed, and often sooner if advised by their artist. The key is keeping showers:
-
Short
-
Lukewarm
-
Gentle
Very hot water can increase redness and irritation, especially in the first few days.
How to Wash a New Tattoo in the Shower
When showering with a fresh tattoo:
-
Let water run over it gently
-
Use clean hands, not sponges or cloths
-
Wash lightly with a mild, fragrance-free soap
-
Rinse thoroughly
This fits into most different ways to heal your tattoo, whether you’re dry healing, lightly moisturising, or using second skin aftercare.
What to Avoid in the Shower
Avoid:
-
Scrubbing the tattoo
-
High-pressure water directly on it
-
Long, steamy showers
-
Letting shampoo or conditioner sit on the tattoo
Treat it like delicate skin, not something that needs scrubbing clean.
Drying After a Shower
Pat the tattoo dry using a clean towel or paper towel. Don’t rub it. Rubbing can irritate healing skin, especially once peeling starts.
Drying properly is important during the tattoo healing stages day by day, particularly in the first week when the skin is most vulnerable.
What If My Tattoo Is Covered?
If your tattoo is covered with second skin or protective film, follow your artist’s advice. Most second skin products are shower-safe, but you should still avoid hot water and long showers. If the film lifts or leaks, it may need to be removed and the tattoo cleaned.
Showering During the Peeling Stage
Yes, you can still shower when your tattoo is peeling. In fact, gentle washing can help remove loose flakes naturally. Just don’t force anything — peeling skin should come away on its own.
If you’re unsure whether what you’re seeing is expected, it helps to understand what is normal during tattoo healing so you don’t mistake peeling for a problem.
Reassurance
Showering won’t ruin your tattoo. Poor aftercare will.
As long as you keep showers short, gentle, and clean, showering is part of good aftercare — not something to be afraid of. Treat the tattoo with care, avoid soaking, and let your body handle the healing.
